On 9/11, James Bernsen worked as the deputy press secretary to U.S. Senator Phil Gramm in his Dallas office. When the office was evacuated, Bernsen was the lone staffer chosen to stay behind to coordinate media response. While watching the coverage, he made the decision to join the military to fight back. He was commissioned as U.S. Navy intelligence officer in 2004.

From 2007-08, Bernsen was deployed to Baghdad, Iraq. Upon returning, he was demobilized into the U.S. Navy Reserve, where he was stationed in a unit supporting exercises primarily in the Pacific. Over the next decade, Bernsen took part in 12 exercises at sea and ashore in Korea, Japan, the Philippines and Australia.

In 2017, Lieutenant Commander Bernsen was recalled to active duty for a tour in Afghanistan.

As a civilian, James Bernsen has worked as a political strategist for three U.S. Senators: Gramm, Kay Bailey Hutchison and Ted Cruz, as well as various caucuses, elected officials and organizations.
